This series all started with a mistake. I was roughing out an idea which was to be very curvaceous and cut too deep and too straight. So I went with it. I have enjoyed seeing what the effects of grain and proportions are. Different materials responded differently.
Here you can see how the marble is becoming translucent, enhancing the grain within.
The redwood tapering piece has a nice balance between hard lines and squiggly grain. The redwood is always a challenge to get a nice finish. The grain has very hard ridges, countered by very soft wood. It also has a certain murkiness to the wood which I dislike. However it does char beautifully, as the ridges 'pop' and exaggerate the grain, and where other woods would just be matte black the redwood gains a velvetty sheen.
